The Microbiome of Dry and Sensitive Skin: Everything You Need to Know

Microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses) live everywhere. The community of microorganisms living on the skin is the microbiome. The skin microbiome is a complex ecosystem where communities of microorganisms interact and perform various functions.

What does the microbiome consist of?

The composition of the skin microbiome is influenced by age, gender, skin area, level of hygiene and the type of cleansing and care products used, climate, race, profession, and other factors. The number of microorganisms on the skin of a healthy person is constantly changing and depends on the season, reaching a maximum in winter and a minimum in summer. Changes in the skin microbiome can be caused by changes in environmental conditions (humidity, sweating, sebum secretion, pH, skin thickness) and can be a consequence of a skin disease, as well as the influence of various exogenous and endogenous factors. Thus, the microbial landscape of the skin changes with age and is influenced by environmental factors, lifestyle, including skin care practices, as well as treatments or the household use of antiseptics and antimicrobials. Generally, greater microbial diversity is considered more favorable, and a more diverse ecosystem is considered more resilient. The "Western" lifestyle, or more specifically, its urban lifestyle, also influences the skin microbiota, making it less diverse. It is believed that the microbiome evolves with us, meaning our current microbiome is adapted to modern conditions. Skin microbes obtain nutrients from their host and contribute to maintaining the skin's barrier function. Microbial interactions within the host body can be categorized into three categories: positive, negative, and neutral, which have no impact on the human body. Dysbiosis in the microbe-host system can affect their interaction and lead to disease or, conversely, be a consequence of a skin disease.

How to care for skin with xerosis?

Xerosis (from the Greek "xero" - dry, and "osis" - disease) is dry skin caused by disturbances in the hydrolipid balance of the skin. Xerosis of the skin can occur at any age. The most vulnerable categories of people for the development of xerosis are people with skin diseases and the elderly. When skin is dry, the composition of the microbiota also changes, so modern moisturizers use active ingredients (prebiotics) that help restore normal microbiota - that is, the part of the beneficial microbiota that is present on the skin and has a positive effect on it.
Despite the various causes of xerosis, in real clinical practice, emollients are prescribed empirically, so the drugs of choice should be specially developed drugs that can solve several problems associated with the skin barrier.

Thanks to research into the development of care products for dry and sensitive skin, LIBREDERM has managed to create a comprehensive line of products that meets all the needs of such skin. Thus, the Cerafavit LIBREDERM line of products with ceramides and prebiotics was specially developed for dry (very dry) and sensitive skin. They effectively moisturize the skin, retain moisture, strengthen the natural protective barrier and support its microbiome. This series of products does not contain dyes and fragrances, and is well tolerated by the skin.

Care for dry and sensitive skin for adult patients

Step 1. Cleansing

The first step involves the use of cleansers: a soothing shower gel with protective properties for the sensitive skin of babies, children and adults, Cerafavit LIBREDERM with ceramides and prebiotics, is suitable. It thoroughly cleanses the skin, instantly softens, moisturizes and soothes, protects against the effects of hard water. The gel provides prolonged hydration for up to 24 hours.

Step 2. Care

As a primary moisturizer, I recommend Cerafavit LIBREDERM Triple Action Balm. Its formula restores the skin's barrier function and provides hydration, even in cases of severe dryness. Shea butter nourishes, softens, and moisturizes the skin, ceramides restore its protective properties, vitamin F strengthens the skin's lipid barrier, a prebiotic regulates the microbiome balance, and physioadapted water ensures the product's compatibility with the skin due to its chemical composition enriched with microelements.

Care for adult patients with very dry skin prone to atopy

Step 1. Cleansing

For cleansing, use Cerafavit LIBREDERM Lipid-Restoring Softening Shower Oil with ceramides and a prebiotic. This product contains over 50% natural peach and soybean oils, which nourish, soften, and strengthen the skin's protective barrier, keeping it hydrated. Ceramides restore protective functions, vitamin F strengthens the lipid barrier, and a prebiotic restores the microbiome.

Step 2. Care

For severe dryness, including in older patients, we recommend Cerafavit LIBREDERM, a triple-action lipid-restoring balm for the face and body of infants, children, and adults, with ceramides and a prebiotic. The rich formula of the emollient balm instantly softens and nourishes the skin, provides long-lasting hydration for up to 48 hours, eliminates the feeling of tightness, reducing itching caused by dryness.

Currently, it has been proven that proper care and regular use of moisturizing and restorative products are one of the main aspects in the treatment of skin xerosis. Today, the arsenal of topical dermatocosmetic preparations with various mechanisms of action used to eliminate xerosis and restore the barrier function of the skin is quite extensive. Because of this, certain difficulties arise in choosing the most optimal product. It is necessary to be able to navigate this diversity in order to correctly select the right product for each specific case. Based on scientific data on the needs of dry, very dry and sensitive skin, as well as many years of experience in the development of dermatocosmetic products, LIBREDERM has managed to create a comprehensive collection of products that meet all the needs of such skin.
